Our policies and tools seem to be working' said Professor Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the EEA. 'Although we are expecting an even sharper decline in 2009, caused mainly by the recession, we need to ensure that the downward trend in emissions continues and that Europe boosts its climate investments, with the ultimate aim of achieving a more resource-efficient economy.'

The combination of high coal and carbon prices accompanied by a drop in natural gas prices in 2008 induced heat and electricity producers to replace more polluting coal by gas and as a result, reduce their GHG emissions. The use of biomass and other renewable sources (wind and hydroelectric power) has also increased significantly in 2008. The economic recession, which started during the second half of the year, also contributed to emission reductions from several sectors including the manufacturing and construction, and road transport sectors. Road transport emissions were also affected by high oil prices, the continued decline in gasoline consumption and a reversal of the upward trend in diesel sales.

The annual reductions for EU-15 and EU-27 revealed in the inventory report fall within the brackets of the 2008 preliminary estimates, published by the Agency in August 2009.

Key findings

The EU-27's emissions have been declining steadily since 2003 to reach 4 940 billion tonnes CO2 equivalents in 2008. Compared to the 2007 emissions, this represents a reduction of 99 million tonnes or 2 %. With the 2008 emissions 11.3 % below its 1990 levels, EU-27 has already achieved more than half of its unilateral reduction target of 20 % by 2020 through domestic emission reductions alone.

In this first year of the Kyoto Protocol's commitment period, EU-15 cut its emissions by 76 million tonnes CO2 equivalents, corresponding to a drop of 1.9 % from 2007. This brought the EU-15 emissions 6.9 %, or 295 million tonnes, below Kyoto base-year levels, already in 2008, not accounting for carbon sinks and the use of Kyoto flexible mechanisms.

For the first time since 1992, emissions from international aviation and maritime transport fell in EU-27, partly due to the economic recession. These two sectors account for about 5.9 % of total greenhouse gas emissions in EU-27 but are not accounted for in relation to measuring progress towards Kyoto targets.

Spain accounted for one third of the net reduction in EU-27, mainly due to a substantial replacement of coal by natural gas and a sharp decline in gasoline consumption in road transport, complemented by an increase in renewable energy generation.

The EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) covered 43 % of total EU-27 greenhouse gas emissions in 2008. In 2008, emission levels under the EU ETS were about 3 % lower than 2007 levels. The recently published 2009 EU ETS data, reveal that verified emissions in 2009 decreased by 11.6 % compared to 2008 levels, and reflects the impact of the economic recession.

What next?

At the end of the summer 2010, the Agency will publish preliminary estimates for the 2009 total EU emissions. This will be followed in the autumn by more comprehensive reports analysing emission trends, policy effectiveness and progress towards meeting the Kyoto and other EU emission targets.

Greenhouse gas emissions in CO2-equivalents (excluding carbon sinks) and Kyoto Protocol targets for 2008–2012
Indeed, geothermal currently supplies less than 1 percent of global electricity demand, whereas hydropower provides for 3 percent of the world energy needs, and biomass 4 percent. The global installed capacity of geothermal was 10 gigawatts in 2007. However, the interest in geothermal has significantly increased worldwide over the past five years. A high profile paper, published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 and expanding on the important potential of enhanced geothermal technology contributed to this rise in interest. Following this, the U.S. government has become the largest investor in geothermal exploration.

Posted via web from World Climate Summit - blog

Co-operative Bank sets up renewables funding of £200m

World Climate Summit - (www.worldclimatesummit.com) The Co-operative Bank has revealed it will lend £200 million to the UK renewables sector in 2010 to help fund the development of renewable and low carbon technologies. The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) and its partners represent more than 50% of the world's construction and involve more than 10,000 companies. By partnering with the largest business conference during COP 16, WorldGBC will bring the global building industry to find solutions to climate change.
"The built environment is unrivalled in its potential to deliver global carbon emission reductions, cost effectively while simultaneously meeting local socio-economic priorities such as energy security, job creation, and delivering affordable housing. There are 69 countries that have Green Building Councils, harnessing industry leadership to deliver aligned global solutions with local implementation. We are pleased to partner with the World Climate Summit, bringing industry leaders together with governments to create to path to a low carbon future together"."
Jane Henley, CEO, World Green Building Council
Michael Mathres, co-Founder of the World Climate Summit said, "The construction industry is responsible for more than 40% of global carbon emissions. It is imperative that we find business solutions to this important global sector, and we are delighted that the World Green Building Council will help us achieve this."

About the World Green Building Council: In 2002 eight nations formed the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), a business led union of national councils whose mission is to accelerate the transformation of the built environment towards sustainability. The WorldGBC is rapidly building an international coalition that represents the entire global construction industry. Facing competition from Japan, China and South Korea, Singapore is trying to attract new green industries to its small city state. Recently, REC of Norway has concluded a billion dollar contract with the Singapore government to manufacture solar panels. The government has set aside $700 million for research and development in the clean tech sector. Other sweeteners include: low trading and taxes which has attracted a plethora of carbon and energy players such as Gazprom, Tricorona and EON. Siemens plc are investing £30 million in an iconic building that will provide a showcase for sustainable technologies. It’s hoped that the Siemens Pavilion will attract over 100,000 visitors a year, including school groups across London who can take advantage of the pavilion’s educational facilities. The centre, with its exhibitions, shops and cafes, will provide a space for people to find out more about the innovations that will help us achieve the low-carbon society we need to secure our future, environmentally and economically. Site surveys and investigations are underway and we expect a planning application to be lodged in the summer.
Link >> http://www.london.gov.uk/blog/kickstarting-londons-green-enterprise-district

Posted via web from World Climate Summit - blog

World Energy Use to Grow 49 Percent Between 2007 and 2035

World Climate Summit - (www.worldclimatesummit.com) - World marketed energy consumption grows 49 percent between 2007 and 2035, driven by economic growth in the developing nations of the world, according to the Reference case projection from the International Energy Outlook 2010 (IEO2010 ) released today by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Other highlights include:

From 2007 to 2035, total world energy consumption rises by an average annual 1.4 percent in the IEO2010 Reference case. Strong economic growth among the non-OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) nations drives the increase. Non-OECD energy use increases by 2.2 percent per year; in the OECD countries energy use grows by only 0.5 percent per year.

Petroleum and other liquid fuels remain the largest energy source worldwide through 2035, though projected higher oil prices erode their share of total energy use from 35 percent in 2007 to 30 percent in 2035.

World natural gas consumption increases 1.3 percent per year, from 108 trillion cubic feet in 2007 to 156 trillion cubic feet in 2035. Tight gas, shale gas, and coalbed methane supplies increase substantially in the IEO2010 Reference case-especially from the United States, but also from Canada and China.

In the absence of additional national policies and/or binding international agreements that would limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions, world coal consumption is projected to increase from 132 quadrillion Btu in 2007 to 206 quadrillion Btu in 2035, at an average annual rate of 1.6 percent. China alone accounts for 78 percent of the total net increase in world coal use from 2007 to 2035.

World net electricity generation increases by 87 percent, from 18.8 trillion kilowatthours in 2007 to 35.2 trillion kilowatthours in 2035. Renewables are the fastest growing source of new electricity generation, increasing by 3.0 percent per year in the Reference case; followed by coal-fired generation, which increases by 2.3 percent per year.

In the IEO2010 Reference case, world industrial energy consumption grows 66 percent, from 184 quadrillion Btu in 2007 to 262 quadrillion Btu in 2035. The non-OECD economies account for about 95 percent of the world increase in industrial sector energy consumption in the Reference case.

Almost 20 percent of the world's total delivered energy is used for transportation, most of it in the form of liquid fuels. The transportation share of world total liquids consumption increases from 53 percent in 2007 to 61 percent in 2035 in the IEO2010 Reference case, accounting for 87 percent of the total increase in world liquids consumption.

In the IEO2010 Reference case, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rise from 29.7 billion metric tons in 2007 to 42.4 billion metric tons in 2035--an increase of 43 percent. Much of the increase in carbon dioxide emissions is projected to occur among the developing nations of the world, especially in Asia (Figure 2 ).

Link>> http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/ieo/index.html
Presentation>> http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/speeches/howard052510.pdf
Posted via email from World Climate Summit - blog

"Green" Venture Capital firm hires Tony Blair

World Climate Summit - (www.worldclimatesummit.com) - Khosla Ventures, a Venture Capital firm that focuses on cleantech and information technology startups, today announced a strategic partnership with Tony Blair Associates. I am thrilled to play whatever small part I can.” Tony Blair during press conference
Although Tony Blair did admit he was not a cleantech expert, his firm, Tony Blair Associates will offer strategic advice to Khosla Ventures’ green portfolio companies, drawing on his considerable geopolitical, political, organizational and environmental expertise. With Mr. Blair’s support, Khosla Ventures will continue to foster innovations that can cost-effectively reduce carbon emissions – in areas that include solar, batteries, biofuels, lighting, mechanical and energy efficiency, and building materials. Mr. Khosla dubs their area of focus “maintech” rather than “cleantech,” as he believes the infrastructure of society will be substantially impacted by technologists and entrepreneurs supported by his and other similar portfolios.
