World Climate Summit - (www.worldclimatesummit.com) via cleantech.com The geothermal industry is not yet as well established as other renewables such as hydroelectric power or biomass. Indeed, geothermal currently supplies less than 1 percent of global electricity demand, whereas hydropower provides for 3 percent of the world energy needs, and biomass 4 percent. The global installed capacity of geothermal was 10 gigawatts in 2007. However, the interest in geothermal has significantly increased worldwide over the past five years. A high profile paper, published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 and expanding on the important potential of enhanced geothermal technology contributed to this rise in interest. Following this, the U.S. government has become the largest investor in geothermal exploration.
